Police Lies Matter

The recent incident in Uvalde, Texas that involved a tragic school shooting led to a series of events that caused people to lose faith in the police. As they made statements and wrote up reports about what happened, something important was revealed — the police lie.

The stories continued to evolve in ways that didn't make sense and were completely contradictory to statements made by the victims. And people began to realize that the police, who they had idealized as heroes, were not being truthful to them.

Inconsistencies with Police Stories about the Incident

There are plenty of loose ends and inconsistencies with the police statements — some of which ceased to make sense as the stories continued to evolve.

Things like when they engaged the shooter, whether or not a door was left open, whether or not a door was locked or secured, and how they dealt with the parents and family members concerned — there was no consensus on these seemingly small but important details, which led to suspicions about the truthfulness of police reports.

In fact, the police even painted themselves as heroes, in the beginning, talking about how they confronted the gunman and exaggerated the encounter. However, slowly but surely, the truth came out. People came to learn how long the kids were in there waiting for the police to arrive, and other details that were contradictory to what the police initially said.

Why Police Lies Matter

It blew people's minds that the police could openly and blatantly lie about an incident that was so important. But there are those who weren't surprised — lawyers, who work day in and day out in the trenches of the courtrooms of America, read the reports, and follow the facts of controversies in depth.

They know that the police lie all the time — even about important things. And when it comes to them, a lie is not a simple white, innocent lie. What they say, whether truthful or not, goes into police reports and the people involved in the lies can have serious charges brought against them. Police can stand in the courtroom to testify, raise their right hands to give the oath to be truthful, and then go on to tell big fat lies.

Based on police lies, people can lose their liberty, go through a terrifying trial, be sent to prison, and get separated from their families. And it's a shame that the people that citizens should be able to count on to serve and protect are the exact same people that will make a fictitious case against them.

But maybe they can't be blamed entirely. What else can people expect from a society that encourages the police to lie? In fact, the Supreme Court itself has ruled that the police are allowed to lie and deceive people to get them to make statements and give up their individual rights.

The Uvalde shooting incident, tragic as it may have been, shed light on very important lessons about society, the law, and the police. One of the most important is that police lies matter and it's unfortunate that it took such a tragic incident for people to learn that.
